Follow-up on Sport vs. Non-Sport

- I erred on the ski jump thing. For some reason, when I wrote it, I thought that it was like diving and gymnastics, where the form of the jump and landing were taken into account and the jumper was given a score. It's for distance, like track's long jump, so it's a sport. My bad.

- In regard to diving, gymnastics, and the like.....Mrs. Show made a great point to me. How are those any different than the slam dunk contest? Athletic ability, hand-eye coordination, and making the dunk are all very important, and human judges decide what is good and what is not. Then I realized baseball's home run derby even has a definitive score. If those aren't sports, then gymnastics and figure skating are not.

- I'm definitely on board with auto racing as a sport right now, and as far as equestrian and horse racing, the definition doesn't say anything about a human being the main athlete, so I guess we have to include those as well.

- RE: JRH's post about shooting sports. I'm still not sure that stuff makes it a sport, per se. Maybe an art?

- My Aunt wrote me about this topic, as she has 3 boys who play sports, with the oldest being in Jr. High right now...here's her take:
  • Band kids, up here anyway, get a letterman's jacket for band, although they are different than the athletic ones. And, as a side note, anyone can get a letterman's jacket for their child, as the schools no longer issue them, they are purchased privately. How to earn a "letter" at your school is completely spelled out in the handbook, and you can purchase any patch you want. There are those sports stores that are trying to hold together the integrity of the jacket, but there are just as many that will sell you whatever you want, no questions asked.
  • I disagree -- Sex, while not done competitively, definitely can be a sport. There are customs and a definite finish line.
  • Cheerleading is NOT a sport. I don't care how athletic they are, or if they get scholarships. Valedictorians get scholarships. Studying is not a sport.

What are your thoughts on cycling? I didn't see it mentioned in your article. I think it is absolutely, positively not a sport. I can't stand it when people call Lance Armstrong a great overall athlete. He is a great endurance athlete, period.

Also, I'm on the fence about gymnastics being a sport but I do know that gymnasts are incredible athletes.

Finally, what is your definition of a great athlete? Which sport(s) has the best athletes in the world?

I've got cycling listed under "sport." I didn't really go into detail on all-around athletes vs. endurance athletes, but at first glance I would absoultely agree with you. Riding a bike doesn't seem to require great hand-eye coordination or special skills...just an incredible amount of strength and endurance.

As far as my definition of great athletes and which sports house said athletes, well, that just might be a good future column idea. Thanks, and I'll get right on it.
